This Simple Trick Will Protect Your Eyes

You are either reading this from a computer screen or a mobile screen. you probably have been using this screen for a couple of hours today. This continuous use of screens can cause eye strain and make your eyes feel tired. Why?

We humans generally blink about 15 times in a minute, when we stare at a screen focused on work or play, this tends to reduce and may lead to dry, irritated eyes.

What Do I Do?

Have you heard of the 20-20-20 rule?

Every 20 minutes using a screen, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. it takes about 20 seconds for the eyes to completely relax.

Some of us work or live in small rooms that may not be up to 20 feet, here is what you can do instead; look at something far away from you or look out of a window if you work close to one.

How Do I Know My Eyes Are Strained?

Some symptoms you might notice are:

  • Sore eyes
  • Dry Eyes
  • Itching eyes
  • Double vision
  • Headaches
  • Sensitive to light
  • Blurred vision
  • Watery Eyes

If you notice any of these, it is always best to see your eye doctor immediately.

Are there other ways I can help with Eye Strain?

  • Reduce the light from your screen to match the surrounding light around you
  • Blink often.
  • If you can, place the screen far from you. Try putting it 25 inches from you.
  • If you wear contact lenses, you may experience more dryness and irritation. Try giving your eyes a break from time to time by wearing glasses.
