Stomach ulcers are common these days, that gnawing pain that occurs just below your ribs either before or after a meal that feels like someone placed burning charcoal in your belly
Yes! that is the pain I am talking about
The common causes of ulcers are infection by a bacteria known as H Pylori and long term use of NSAIDs, drugs like ibuprofen or Diclofenac etc, even aspirin
I would say now that Stress and peppery foods do not cause ulcers, but they can make it worse
So how can you prevent having ulcers, these steps may help
1. Reduce/Limit the way you take NSAIDS, (Ibuprofen etc)
2. Stop smoking: smoking just makes everything worse
3. Wash your hands to prevent infections
4. Reduce alcohol: large amounts of alcohol has been found to worsen ulcers
5. Manage your stress
If you already have ulcers, here is what you can do:
Avoid alcohol
Avoid carbonated drinks
Citrus fruits:eg oranges, may cause heartburn in some people, even chocolate too, but this differs from person to person
Cut down on caffeine
Eat smaller frequent meals, instead of large meals that are so far in-between
Avoid spicy foods
Avoid MILK! It can reduce your pain now, but will make your stomach produce more acids!
Avoid Fatty meals
Take fibre Rich food
Food that is rich in fibre include but is not limited to:
Beans, Peas, Soybeans, Peanuts
Cashewnuts, African Walnuts
Egusi, ogbono, pumpkin, breadfruit seed (popularly known as ukwa), locust bean seeds
Ofada rice
ogi/akamu/pap, kunu drink etc.
Whole wheat.
Oats/Oatmeal
