Keeping the Lights On: Sustainable Energy for Better Care

Many of our hospitals depend a lot on electricity. The problem however, is that power is not guaranteed, it is hoped for. And hope is not a reliable system.

We saw firsthand how something as basic as electricity was putting lives at risk. Newborn babies in incubators. Mothers in labour. Critical equipment that should never go off for even a second.

But power outages are frequent. Generators fail.
Fuel runs out. And in a Neonatal ICU, even a brief moment without power is a life-threatening emergency.

Because when the lights go out, incubators stop.
Oxygen support is interrupted. Monitoring systems go blank. And in those moments, healthcare workers are forced to do the impossible by trying to save lives without the tools they need. That is not a position anyone should be in.

We knew this problem needed more than a temporary fix. So we focused on creating a solution that is sustainable, consistent, and built to last.

  • At Epe General Hospital and Randle General Hospital, we installed 11KW solar power systems, designed to provide uninterrupted electricity to critical maternal and child health services.
  • At MHC Gbaja, Surulere, we powered the Neonatal ICU with a solar inverter system, ensuring that life-saving equipment remains functional regardless of grid failures.

Today, things are different. Care no longer pauses because of an outage. Doctors and nurses can focus on saving lives, not scrambling for alternatives. And for over 100 of our most vulnerable babies and their mothers,
care continues, uninterrupted.

No more delivering babies by torchlight. No more anxious glances at fuel gauges. No more silent prayers that the generator holds up just a little longer. Just steady, reliable power, doing what it should have always done: supporting life when it matters most.
